At Castle Douglas, simply put, the bride is always right. Though all wedding budgets are not created equal, we find ways to provide the best day possible regardless of budget.

How did you come up with the idea to build a castle?
In addition to sharing a love for the legends of King Arthur, both John and Charlotte always wanted to live in a castle. They saw in their travels that real castles were used in the modern day not only as family residences but also as popular places to hold private events.

Who designed the castle?
The entire Dumford family helped design the basic layout, drawing on medieval Scottish architecture and traditional features of castles such as the Great Hall with its minstrel's gallery. The layout of Castle Douglas is also inspired by Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott. To bring the design to completion, the Dumfords hired Mark Risser, a residential designer.

Why is it called Castle Douglas?
In 1998, Bernadyne Douglas Dumford, J.R. Dumford's wife, died suddenly. Castle Douglas is dedicated to her memory. Also, while on a trip to Scotland, the Dumford family discovered a town named "Castle Douglas" in honor of Threave Castle, an ancient stronghold of the Douglas family. When it came time to name the castle, "Castle Douglas" seemed to fit.

Where is Castle Douglas?
Castle Douglas is in Rockwall, Texas, approximately 25 miles (30 minutes' drive) east of Dallas. The castle is built on a hill amidst 71 acres of rolling pasture and formal gardens.

Will you have more than one event at a time?
No. When you schedule your wedding or event at Castle Douglas, you receive our undivided attention for your event. Guests will also be free to stroll in the castle rose gardens currently containing over 250 David Austin English Roses.

How many people will Castle Douglas hold?
For your ceremony, the Great Hall will hold up to 250 people. For receptions, all the main rooms of the ground floor may be
used concurrently. The Great Hall will seat 100 people at 60" round tables, and the ballroom can accommodate up to 150 people, depending on the buffet configuration, dance floor, or stage. There is also room for 40 people in the pub. If weather permits, the terrace overlooking the rose garden may also be used.

Is there a place for the bride to get ready? What about the groom?
Both the bride and groom have spacious suites set aside just for them with full bath/shower accommodations. We can also arrange to have a hairdresser and makeup artist prepare you on-site for the big event.
